Coming soon to Tottenham Court Road: Our BRAND NEW flagship store. Excited? You should be. The doors of our two-storey stunner will open shortly, and trust us, you won’t want to miss Pin & Polish, our first ever beauty bar… not to mention our coffee-to-cocktails café, Saucer & Spritz. We sat down with Sophie from The Illustrated Nail (and the mani-pedi master at Pin & Polish) to talk all things TCR.
Oasis – The Illustrated Nail, where did it all start?
Sophie – In 2009, after my illustration and animation degree course, my mum encouraged me to attend manicure and pedicure classes at the college she worked at while I was applying for other jobs.
My mum has been in the beauty industry for over 20 years and growing up, she would always paint my nails different patterns. I had Union Jacks when I went to see the Spice Girls concert back in 1996, and even little Powerpuff Girls!
Although I originally wanted to become an illustrator, I absolutely fell in love with nail art and set up my own blog “The Illustrated Nail”. I went freelance in May 2011 after my blog gained popularity, and have been working as The Illustrated Nail ever since. Now I couldn’t see myself doing anything else, I love it!
Oasis – What’s ‘Pin & Polish’ all about then?
Sophie – Pampering in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with a choice of express or luxe manicures and a range of classic, seasonal and bespoke nail art designs.
Oasis – Do you have a design/colour you can’t stop wearing?
Sophie – I love classic half moon designs in contrasting colours. Try classic red with white, naked moons… or a rich inky blue with metallic gold moons for the party season.
Oasis – And what’s your seasonal shade of choice?
Sophie – Black and gold is my favourite party colour combo. Try The Party Nail on our nail menu, black with delicate metallic gold stars, perfect for NYE!
Oasis – Any nail pet peeves?
Sophie – Nothing worse than chipped nails!
Who owns the best nails on the block?
Rihanna’s nails always look perfect! I especially love the long tapered square nail shape she chooses.
Oasis – Any ‘insider’ tips for perfectly painted nails?
Sophie – If you find painting nails a little tricky, you can make your polish application picture-perfect by using a brush dipped in nail polish remover to clean away any mistakes.
Oasis – And any advice for all those nail biters out there?
Sophie – Try a gel colour polish manicure which lasts up to two weeks. The polish application is a lot stronger and is hard to bite off, allowing your nails to grow during this time!
