THE STORY BEHIND THE LONDON FLORAL

In the second of our V&A blog series, Print Designer, Daisy, explains how an 18th century London illustrator inspired one of Summer’s most beautiful florals…

THE HISTORY:

“Who said London isn’t a hotbed for flora and fauna? Ok well perhaps it’s not now, but back in the 1700s when the Irish botanical illustrator William Kilburn lived and worked here, he was inspired by the city’s sprawling meadows. This beautiful floral was designed by him in 1790.”

THE DESIGNER:

“William Kilburn started out as an apprentice in a Dublin cotton-printing factory before moving to London to work as an illustrator. His designs appear in William Ourtis’s  Floral Londinensis, a field guide to wild flowers growing within 10 miles of London. After some time he opened his own calico-printing factory for which he designed exquisitely detailed floral patterns.”

 HOW WE MET:

“This stood out in the V&A museum archives as one of the most beautiful botanical florals I’ve ever seen. Everything from the delicate hand painted feel, to the variety of flowers and the sheer skill required to paint it makes this print seriously special.”

 HOW WE MADE IT:

“I loved the brightly coloured florals, but to give the print an Oasis twist we updated the base colour with ivory, navy, pale blue and lilac – all key SS15 shades.”

 WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT:

“It’s just timeless – you can wear this print forever.”
